Waikato

Well-known for its nature-based tourism, underground adventure and iconic Waikato River, the Hamilton & Waikato region offers something for every visitor - from Hamilton’s urban attractions to the stunning black sand surf beaches of Raglan and countless walking trails through the rolling hills and ancient bush-clad mountains that shape the landscape.

At the heart of the region are its towns and main city of Hamilton, each with its own character and charm. All come with great shops, galleries and eateries, with top events and visitor attractions to match. The region’s main metropolis of Hamilton is located on the banks of the Waikato River and the city’s rich cultural mix and vibrant centre make it a perfect place to experience the friendly Kiwi lifestyle.

Soft adventure options in the great outdoors also abound in the Hamilton & Waikato Region. The majestic Waikato River winds its way peacefully through the region, offering great cruising, kayaking, boating, and fishing spots while situated on the west coast of the region, the premier surfing destination of Raglan has one of the longest left-hand surf breaks in the world.

Alternatively a short travel south in the region enables you to explore the natural wonders of Waitomo Caves. A land of contrasts with much of the area’s wonders found below the earth’s surface as rolling hills and unspoilt native bush gives way to subterranean limestone caverns with glowworms and underground adventure activities galore.

Those seeking the finer things in life, including boutique golf courses, gourmet eateries and rejuvenating natural spring spas are also well catered for while film buffs and Lord of Rings fans have the opportunity to hear how movie magic was made on a guided tour of Hobbiton Movie Set near Matamata.

Local Knowledge

Waikato is an area you can base your holiday on if you are visiting the central North Island.

The main city is Hamilton but the region extends right through Cambridge, The Waikato river, Raglan, Huntly, Matamata, Waitomo, Tokoroa, Te Awamutu and Morrinsville.

It is a region of lush rolling hills that is rich in farmland and natural harbours. Raglan is a hot spot for surfing and Matamata is a must see destination for those who want to see New Zealand’s own “middle earth” from Lord of the Rings.

‘Waikato, the Maori word for ‘flowing water’, also refers to the river which runs through the region’

The region is centrally located only 90 minutes from Auckland, Tauranga and Rotorua and boasts many affluent and scenic townships. For those interested in the history of New Zealand, Waikato is the ancient site of the 1860 Land Wars and is also home to the New Zealand’s National Marae where the Maori King Tuheitia Paki sits.
