If you are after a unique guided experience, Awhina Wilderness offers a native bush walk to view giant Totara and Rimu trees guided by representatives of the Pouakani tribe who have guarded the mountain and forest for centuries. If you are on a budget, the district is a great place to be with a wide range of free or cheap activities. The Aratiatia Rapids and the Huka Falls are ‘must-see’ tourist attractions that are free of charge. Weather permitting, the Great Lake Walkway provides a gentle lakeside walk or cycle with stunning views of the lake and mountains.
