So why holiday in Taupō, Turangi or Mangakino?  The range of activities to keep the kids entertained and the parents happy are as diverse as the landscape itself, which boasts unique geothermal scenery, stunning waterfalls and world heritage forest reserves – not to mention the largest freshwater lake in Australasia!  There is something for everyone and a good mix of free and fun things to do, no matter what the weather is doing!

The region is the perfect place to base yourself if you are planning to ski or snowboard during your holiday or weekend away.  Mt Ruapehu has world class skiing and snowboarding facilities, with the longest vertical drop in Australasia.  Whakapapa and Turoa ski fields are located in a Dual World Heritage Area and have the highest lift access terrain in New Zealand.  The two resorts have a combined area of 1050 hectares, with an excellent variety of terrain to suit all levels of skiers and snowboarders, with dedicated areas for tobogganing and tubing.From Taupō you are 1 hour 20 minutes drive to Whakapapa or 2 hours from Turoa.

If your family is in to adrenalin and action – Great Lake Taupō is the place to be!  Whether it is jet boating , river rafting or bungy jumping that gives you your thrills, there are a wide range of options to choose from.  Taupō and Turangi are world famous trout fishing spots so get along on one of the many fly-fishing tours available.

Did you know Great Lake Taupō is known as the Events Capital of New Zealand?   The winter calendar includes the Contact Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge, Mizuno Taupo Half Marathon and Off road Marathon and many other national sporting events.  Beyond the athletics, other yearly events highlight arts and culture, food and wine and festive seasonal celebrations.  The Taupo Winterfest and the Erupt Festival are highlights for the region and there are often concerts and theatre and performing arts shows to attend. 

If you are looking for some local history or art and culture, there is a wide range of interesting things to visit and look at.  These include Maori carvings which you can get to by boat, the Taupō Museum, Daphne’s Museum in Mangakino, the Volcanic Activity Centre, Art in the Park, glass blowing at Lava Glass and food and cultural experience evenings at The Wairakei Terraces.

There are a wide range of picturesque walkways and cycle-ways around Mangakino.  If you are after a unique guided experience, Awhina Wilderness offers a native bush walk to view giant Totara and Rimu trees guided by representatives of the Pouakani tribe who have guarded the mountain and forest for centuries.

If you are on a budget, the district is a great place to be with a wide range of free or cheap activities. The Aratiatia Rapids and the Huka Falls are ‘must-see’ tourist attractions that are free of charge.  Weather permitting, the Great Lake Walkway provides a gentle lakeside walk or cycle with stunning views of the lake and mountains.

Another popular winter activity at the Great Lake is relaxing in one of many natural hot springs in the area.

When it comes to shopping, Taupō’s Town Centre will not disappoint.  The shopping village is in a boutique setting with quaint shops, outdoor-adventure stores and quality cafes.
